Visit the CSA on the Web!

We are delighted to announce that you can now visit the CSA on the internet at www.whippoorwillfarmcsa.com.

Thanks to the creativity and very hard work of Rusty Gordon, who has a lot of computer expertise in addition to his farming skills, you can now find CSA information, membership forms and recipes on the site, as well as make secure, on-line payments with your credit card through Paypal. We hope you will find the site useful and welcome your feed-back and suggestions.

There is still time to sign up for CSA 2008

Andrew is ordering seeds and planning crops. We must know soon how many shares worth of food the Farm needs to produce this season. If you are planning to join but haven’t sent in your forms, please do so as soon as possible. If making a large payment is difficult for you, please talk to Andrew about making a small payment to secure your place, but get your reservation in. We don’t want anyone who has been a loyal supporter to be left out this year. Please tell any friends who might be on the fence that there is time to join, but time is running out. We will still be offering some seasonal shares later in the spring, but full shares take a bit more planning (and planting).

The greenhouse is going into production

Among the wonderful things our Island community accomplished last year in coming together to encourage an agriculturally-oriented buyer for Thimble Farm was the preservation of the greenhouse on the property. Andrew’s lease on Thimble never before included access to this facility but our arrangement with Eric Grubman, Thimble Farm’s new owner, now includes the entire property. The Farm crew has emptied the greenhouse of debris and the remains of the hydroponic tomato operation and will soon be planting our starter crops in there. We are very excited about the greenhouse’s potential for greater efficiency in growing seedlings for transplanting out into the fields as well as for extending the season and bringing some crops (like tomatoes) to your table earlier. A lot this year is going to be experimental, and we will keep you informed about how it is going.

Meet our new Administrator

Many thanks to Carla Hoyt who served so tirelessly and ably as our Administrator last season. Please welcome this year’s Administrator, Meg Higgins meg@whippoorwillfarmcsa.com

Walking before we run

The transition from the insecurity of short-term leases on agricultural land to the promise of a long-term location has opened up countless opportunities to re-think how we do things, where we invest time and money and what kind of Farm and CSA we want to be. The best long-term ownership structure for the Thimble Farm land, a stable financial base for the CSA, energy sustainability, perennial crops (asparagus, berries), composting, and other complex issues offer us fascinating possibilities. We need technical help to evaluate our options. We have applied for a grant from a program of the US Department of Agriculture and, if awarded the funds, will launch a strategic planning process with an experienced and diverse team of experts to help us make decisions. We’ll let you know more as the program progresses.

New ideas, new energy

At the potluck supper last December, we circulated a signup sheet asking members with specific skills to indicate if they might like to volunteer for any of the many tasks necessary in running a successful CSA of our size. We are forming groups interested in membership coordination, fundraising, farm clean up, special events (like more pot lucks), working on the farm or in the farm stand and other tasks. Please go to the web site at www.whippoorwillfarmcsa.com for more information on volunteer opportunities and please join in the effort to make the CSA your CSA.

We look forward to seeing you in the Spring!
